Michaelmas 2010; 0th Week

The first poem of my tenureship this year. It reads thus:

Corpuscles, as some of you may be aware,
(Those second and third years who may have been
there)
Last term, in the face of no competition
I gained this most lofty of college Positions;
Now I am your Poet; your Laureate bold
My job is to write; and to write, I am told
Humorous ditties to liven the meetings
When the minutes are dull and the pizza’s been
eaten.

You may not have seen me around (it’s a pity,
But the price that one pays when one’s not ‘On
Committee’)
Please accept my apologies, and more; in absentia
These humble half-rhyming lines that I’ve sent to
ya:

So welcome (and back) to the College you love
Where the Pelican pecks at itself from above;
The choir is tuneful, the gardens are bright
The Quads are resplendent in autumnal light
The Beer Cellar’s hazy, the Library’s quiet
The Finalists panic and the Freshers all riot...

But Corpuscles, I shall not be keeping you long
From your (re)Freshers’ plans with my welcoming songs;
This is simply a taste of my lyrical voice.

So welcome to Corpus. An excellent choice.
