Michaelmas Week 4

Another promise rashly made in my hust was that I would accept commissions from all and sundry who wished for their college-related exploits to be immortalised in verse form. Thankfully I only received one or two such requests, and week 4 brought the first, from the football team, who were uncommonly pleased to have won a game. Neither knowing nor caring much about football I took to this challenge like a duck to noodles.

Football (Hyperbole)

This week, my poem, and first request
Describes a long and arduous quest
A band of heroes, brave and true
though mortals still, like me and you
Their story one of failures past
yet also triumph at the last
This victory of which I speak:
Our football team's first win last week.

I'm told that on this fateful day
The clouds were dark, the sky was grey
A chill north wind began to blow
I wasn't there, I wouldn't know.
Don't take this poetry as scripture,
but hopefully you get the picture
That as they rose to take the field
It seemed our heroes fate was sealed.

For though they stood their ground with pride
The odds weren't really on their side
Their form of late was far from hot
They'd just lost 4 games on the trot
Those gathered there were feeling bleak
They saw no way to break the streak
And as the whistle blew to start could
See no way they'd conquer Hertford*

Yet as the minutes turned to hours
It seemed the day might just be ours
For though the foes attacks were fierce
Our brave defense they could not pierce
So doggedly we held the line
The game went into extra time
We battled on to keep the draw
And won on penalties 5-4.

This tale proves Corpus doesn't quit
Despite our teams being mostly composed of casual players.

*Forced? Maybe, but let's see YOU find a better rhyme for Hertford.
